Tourists seeking car rental in Alicante may wish to check their overseas insurance cover following advice from a leading consumer website.

Car rental in Alicante is a popular choice among independent travellers; however, for those not properly insured, overseas driving can prove a financial nightmare, thisismoney.co.uk reports.

Insurance manager at comparison site uswitch.com Ashton Berkhauer tells the website: “You need to check your cover – if you are not fully insured overseas, you can be left stranded at the roadside.”

He added that all car insurance sold in the UK carries mandatory third-party cover for EU countries, many insurers impose a time limit on the policy.

Drivers seeking car rental in Alicante on their Spanish holiday should also note that the automatic third-party cover will not insure them against losses they incur.

Other aspects of driving Spanish holiday makers may want to take note of include the 120-kilometre speed limit on motorways, variable conditions of road surfaces and that – like in the UK – mobile phone use while driving can result in points being added to a license.
